Freedom rises from the ashes and Bristol chips in

they can burn the books but they cant kill the spirit!

Sometime after 4am on Friday 1st February, the Freedom bookshop and social space in London was firebombed, after persons unknown had forced open a locked metal shutter – sounds like they came prepared!

Fire and water damage was considerable, but not terminal, and luckily nobody was hurt. Britain’s oldest, and probably largest, anarchist bookshop was up and running again within days thanks to an amazing response from supporters around London. The rest of the building is operating reasonably well, allowing the numerous groups who meet or have offices there to continue their work.

Many groups and individuals around the UK and beyond have provided support and solidarity, and there’s an ongoing series of fundraisers to help Freedom pay for repairs and replenish its stocks of books. Continue reading Freedom rises from the ashes and Bristol chips in

Callout for stalls at the 2013 bookfair

Pssst! Would you like hundreds of people coming upto your stall to check out your ideas, literature, campaign, group, merchandise etc? If so you’d better get booked in soon!

At the last Bookfair we had over 40 stalls spread over 65 tables, covering everything from setting up DIY co-ops to workers rights to the ABC of anarchism and hot current international affairs. We’ve got about the same amount of space this time.

Whilst stall priority goes to anarchist groups, projects and distros, there’s always room for a few other worthwhile tables. All the info you need is either on this website, or on the stall booking forms – download one now: booking_stalls2013 (open office) and booking_stalls2013 (pdf). For all stall enquiries email us at BristolBF-stalls@riseup.net.    Continue reading Callout for stalls at the 2013 bookfair

Bristol anarchist bookfair 2013

Here we come…
after a year off we’re back for 2013! The Bookfair Collective has switched venues this year to somewhere with more outdoor space, and we’re a little earlier in anticipation of another hot April. Taking the outdoors theme a little further, expect a potential playfull mix of bookfair and fayre. But we remain deadly serious about the politics, we live in dramatic times. There is much to play for. Free up your day and join us for free.
For more bookfair info and stall booking forms see more details here.

In Anarchy We Trust

Bookfairs are Go!
We are up and running for a Bristol Bookfair in 2013, target date early May, if the right venue in the right place is available. We have a new enlarged collective, a mix of old and new people, and plenty of energy. We may go for a Bookfair theme of something like ‘Radical Futures’, because presently things are shit and arent working at all for the majority of us – we all need a future and it wont happen without serious social change.

We ended up taking 2012 off, which is a shame, but you cant force these things if they aren’t meant to be. Looking around us we see society is bleak, with the majority being largely bullied into submission by the rich tiny minority. How can this be? Why is overt opposition and resistance in the UK apparently so low? By encouraging the exchange of ideas and debate about future alternatives, we at the Bookfair collective hope to do our bit to help warm things up in 2013.

If you’d like to get involved and make the 2013 Bookfair happen, then get in touch via bristolanarchistbookfair@riseup.net. There’ll be plenty to do! Continue reading In Anarchy We Trust

Bookfair Collective update on the Banksy fundraiser

This info is based on discussions on Wednesday afternoon between the venue (Hamilton House), Banksy’s associates, and the Bookfair collective.

In order to avoid any dangerously large queues forming within the venue, for example on the stairs, and to ensure that Bookfair participants and visitors are able to freely move around inside the Bookfair area, the Banksy print will be available from the ground floor (also know as level 2) of the venue. It will be sold from within the venue’s reception and shop area. If a queue does form then it will be possible for it stretch down the street, as opposed to on the stairs. Suitable numbers of Banksy’s associates and venue helpers will assist with this. This will allow free access for visitors to the Bookfair who do not wish to join any queue to buy the Banksy print, alternatively buy the print and then come on in to engage with the politics of anarchism – which is what the event is all about after all. If you wish to donate funds to help with legal support & defence work without buying Banksy’s print, you will easily be able to do so within the Bookfair as a number of groups/stalls will be collecting and providing legal info. New Banksy Fundraising Print at The Bookfair

The Bristol Anarchist Bookfair was contacted on Tuesday by Banksy’s associates advising that he has produced a poster to be exclusively sold at the Bookfair – as a fundraiser for local groups in the Stokes Croft/Bristol area who support local art, squatting and those arrested & harassed as a result of the recent Stokes Croft disturbances.

banksy-printThe poster has been released online at Pictures On Walls, announcing it is available for £5, with the following statement: “After the recent Tesco riots in Bristol Banksy has produced this fine commemorative souvenir poster. It’s available exclusively from Bristol’s Anarchist Bookfair this coming Saturday. All proceeds go to the Peoples Republic of Stokes Croft and associates.”

We understand the ‘associates’ will be using any funds raised to support Stokes Croft defendants and those in housing need.

We are sure that the authorities in Bristol, along with the local corporate media, who have been so full of praise for Banksy in recent times, will appreciate this gesture and not lose their sense of humour. Continue reading New Banksy Fundraising Print at The Bookfair
